This serves as a vital factor in conducting business that is increasingly conscious of the impacts of climate change. PGN Saka has taken proactive steps to ensure that the discovered oil and gas can be exploited in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.

PGN Saka’s Environmentally Friendly Innovations

Efforts in emission reduction are currently the main focus in utilizing safe, environmentally friendly, and sustainable technology for future generations. These efforts are part of PGN Saka’s commitment to supporting the 30 percent emission reduction target by 2030 established by PT Pertamina (Persero). Concrete steps are being carried out toward a sustainable future.

In an effort to support PGN’s decarbonization program, PGN Saka has initiated decarbonization programs covering energy efficiency policies, renewable energy, as well as carbon capture and carbon offset. One of the crucial steps in executing this emission reduction program is the installation of solar panels at the offshore Sidayu (Pangkah Block), aiming to provide an independent energy source for electrical equipment in the project. Solar panels are located on Well Head Platform C (WHP-C) and WHP-D, with a total capacity reaching 18.36 kilowatt peak (kWp).

PGN Saka plays an active role in decarbonization efforts through various programs by selecting environmentally friendly, efficient, and sustainable technologies in asset operations. One of which is carbon offset, namely carbon balancing in natural gas production processes that generate carbon dioxide (CO²). These efforts include planting mangroves around industrial areas, with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions reaching 16,417 tons of CO² equivalent per year.

In addition, PGN Saka utilizes exhaust gas generated from gas turbine generators (GTG). This exhaust gas is recovered using an absorption chiller, which not only helps reduce emissions by 1,687 tons of CO² equivalent per year but also has the potential to save energy up to 34,047 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF). PGN Saka also substitutes the gas engine on the flash gas compressor with an electric-driven flash gas compressor, which can reduce emissions by 4,143 tons of CO² equivalent per year with a potential saving of 41.3 MMSCF.

Preventing the Impacts of Climate Change through Emission Reduction

As one of the upstream oil and gas companies participating in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Indonesia, PGN Saka has begun focusing on the use of renewable energy sources such as solar power and more environmentally friendly operational technologies. The implemented technology allows energy generation without producing toxic gas emissions that contribute to global climate change.

PGN Saka’s involvement in emission reduction efforts is quite significant in the context of facing increasingly felt climate change. At the national level, these steps help Indonesia fulfill its commitment in international agreements such as the Paris Agreement to reduce carbon emissions. Significant steps taken in maintaining national energy security as well as protecting the environment for future generations are carried out by utilizing the potential of renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, and executing decarbonization programs for emission reduction.
